Today I finished my first piece of fiction in many, many years.  I gave it to my husband to proofread.  A nerve wracking experience.

Initially, I was going to write a historical fiction story.  I quickly discovered it is impossible for me to write historical fiction without doing a ton of research.  That rather nullified a short story.

Not knowing what to do, I picked up “1,000 Creative Writing Prompts:  Ideas for Blogs, Scripts, Stories and More” by Bryan Cohen.  Of all things, “Pretend you’re a leaf….” caught me. What the heck?

Hence, the “Leaf Chronicles” was born.  Now I’ve written a middle-grade short story.  Completely unexpected.

Moral of the story:  Let go and run with your inspiration, even if it takes you to foreign and scary places.
